What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

At the root Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a Martial Art created by Carlos & Helio Gracie in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil during the early part of the last century, also famously known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. A highly specialised system evolved and adapted from Kodokan Judo with emphasis on efficiency and strategy to empower smaller, weaker people to defend themselves and defeat those much stronger by using techniques that don’t rely on athleticism, aggression and power but leverage, gravity and a little ingenuity.

But BJJ is much more than just that, it is a way of life, an excellent tool for therapy and self-development both physically and mentally – making you fitter and more flexible but also cultivating wisdom, peace of mind, happiness and well being through relaxed, informal practice. And with modern rules for safety it’s now also an enthralling, dynamic and exciting sport for any age, men, women and children practiced all around the world. It truely is a life style to be enjoyed by all!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is finally here in Luton town & your first session is FREE!

  1. Hey,

I was thinking of coming to the Monday class. I have done a bit of BJJ before but I don’thave a Gi. Will I need one to train?

  2. Hi mate,

are there specific classes just for MMA, i currently do thai boxing and i am looking to start some mma,

    thanks

    1. Sorry for the delay but its better to call or email. We dont have specific MMA classes in Luton as we are a BJJ School however we can prepare you for MMA as we do for some of our fighters already and we do have MMA specific team training but these sessions are not held during the regular classes in Luton.

BJJ alone is actually excellent preparation for MMA though which is why it is probably the most dominant skillset in MMA.

  4. Hey there! Will you ever be opening a BJJ club in St. Albans or somewhere close? I’be been wanting to practise BJJ for abosutely ages! Currently, I’m a grade one brown belt (another year of training and I should be ready for black belt) in Shotokan Karate and my Sensei actually recommended that I do Gracie Jiu Jitsu but there were none in St. Albans so now I’ve started Judo (yesterday) as it was the only thing similar to BJJ in St. Albans and my Sensei there also recommended I do BJJ but there’s none in St. Albans! So are there any plans as to starting one in St. Albans? As I know quite a few people who would also like to practise BJJ here in St. Albans
    Thank you!

  5. Hi,

I am very interested and was wondering if classes are still running in Luton and when you are taking on beginners?

I really want to come down but a little scared.

  6. Hi,

I have been fascinated by the sport and always wanted to train it but always been shy. I would really like to come down some time and train.

Are you still active in Luton?
When is the best time for adult beginners come along?
Will I need to be at a certain fitness level?

    1. Yes we are still active as always! Beginners are always welcome at any class. All levels of experience, all ages and all fitness levels are catered for and integrated into the class so that you will get something out of the training without feeling in over your head. Its all about having fun while developing confidence and ability!

Mondays @ Salto Centre, Camford Way, Sundon Park
      Wednesdays @ BuryPark Community Centre
Fridays @ Salto Camford Way, Sundon Park
